Ingredients For Making 4th of July Bark
- 16 oz bright white candy melts (or equal amounts of white chocolate)
- 6 oz royal blue candy melts
- 6 oz red candy melts
- Red, white and blue M&M's
- Handful of Oreo cookies, crushed into bite-sized pieces
- Red, white and blue star sprinkles
- Red, white and blue jimmies (sprinkles)
How To Make Perfect 4th of July Bark
Prepare The Base
- Place Oreo cookies into a resealable plastic bag, seal, and gently hit with a rolling pin to break cookies into pieces. Set aside.
- Line an 11×15″ jelly roll pan (or regular 9×13″ pan) with aluminum foil and spray very lightly with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Place a small saucepan with about 1 inch of water on the stove and heat on LOW until barely simmering. Pour bright white candy melts in a large glass bowl (that fits inside the saucepan so that the bottom of the bowl does NOT touch the water).
- Place bowl over the top of the saucepan, creating a double boiler. Use a rubber spatula to stir candy melts until melted and smooth.

Don't allow any liquid to come in contact with the candy melts.
Melt The Colored Candy
- Pour red candy melts in a small microwaveable bowl, and pour blue candy melts in another microwaveable bowl.
- Microwave the blue candy melts at 70% power, in 30-45 second intervals, until most of the way melted.
Remove from microwave and stir to let the residual heat melt the remaining bits.
- Repeat process with the red candy melts.

Create The Patriotic Swirl
- Pour melted white candy melts into jelly roll pan and use rubber spatula to smooth into an even layer.
- Alternate drizzling melted red candy melts and blue candy melts in vertical lines over the surface of the melted white candy melts.
You could also just spoon bits of red and blue in a non-pattern over the surface as well.
- Using a small wooden skewer or butter knife, swirl in a figure eight pattern to swirl the red and blue into the white. Repeat over the entire pan.
You're not looking for a pattern here, just pretty patriotic swirls.
Add Toppings And Set
- Sprinkle swirled candy melts with Oreo pieces, M&M's, star sprinkles and jimmies.
- Refrigerate for 1-2 hours, or until hardened.
- Lift edges of aluminum foil to remove bark from pan, and separate the bark from the foil.
- Break into pieces.
- Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
Tips For Perfect Holiday Bark
- Be patient when melting the candy melts - slow and steady wins the race here! Too much heat will make them seize up.
- Want to use white chocolate instead of candy melts? That works too!
Just add a tablespoon of shortening or coconut oil to help it melt smoothly.
- Kids love helping with this recipe - let them do the sprinkling part for a fun family activity.
My daughter Emily always manages to sneak a few M&M's during this step, but who's counting?
- For a cleaner break, score the chocolate bark with a knife while it's still slightly soft, then break along those lines once fully hardened.
- Having trouble with the candy melts hardening too quickly? I've been there!
Just pop the bowl back over the warm water for a few seconds to re-melt.
- When swirling, less is more! Overdo it and you'll end up with a purple mess instead of distinct red, white, and blue colors.

Storage Tips for Your 4th of July Bark
Keep this 4th of July bark refrigerated in an airtight container for best results. It will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks, though I've never had any last that long in my house!
If you're taking it to a summer party, transport it in a cooler with an ice pack to prevent melting, especially on hot days.
There's no need to reheat this treat - it's meant to be enjoyed cold or at room temperature.
If it's been in the fridge and you prefer a softer texture, just let it sit out for about 10 minutes before serving.

Creative Variations of Patriotic Bark
There are so many ways to customize this patriotic bark! Here are some of my favorite variations:
- Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for a sweet-salty combo that's absolutely addictive
- Mix in some crushed pretzels or potato chips for extra crunch
- Try white chocolate chips with a drop of oil instead of candy melts
- Add some dried cranberries or dried blueberries for a fruity twist
- Swap the Oreos for golden Oreos or shortbread cookies
- Use crushed freeze-dried strawberries and blueberries for natural color and flavor
Have you ever tried adding pop rocks candy for a firecracker surprise? I haven't been brave enough yet, but it sounds like a fun experiment!
