  • No baking required - perfect for hot summer days
  • Takes just 15 minutes of hands-on time
  • Impressive red, white and blue design
  • Kid-friendly project that's actually fun
  • Make-ahead friendly (up to 2 weeks!)

I first made these pretzel rods for a neighborhood block party last summer, and they disappeared faster than I could arrange them on the platter!

Even my daughter Emily, who's usually picky about her sweets, couldn't stop munching on them.

The crunchy pretzel combined with the smooth candy coating creates that perfect sweet-salty combination that's honestly addictive.

Simple Ingredients For Perfect Pretzel Rods

  • 12 pretzel rods
  • 1 bag (12 oz) bright white candy melts
  • 1 cup royal blue candy melts
  • 1 cup red candy melts
  • Star shaped sprinkles or patriotic mix sprinkles

I always keep pretzel rods in my pantry because they're so versatile. For this recipe, look for the longer, thicker rods rather than thin pretzel sticks - they hold up better when dipped.

And did you know you can find candy melts at practically any craft store or in the baking section of most grocery stores? I personally love the Wilton brand because they melt so smoothly.

And can we talk about these star sprinkles for a minute? They make the whole treat look so festive! I found mine at Michael's, but you can use any red, white, and blue sprinkle mix you like.

How To Make Delicious Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods

Prep Work First

  1. Line a baking sheet (cookie sheet) with parchment paper, wax paper, or foil. This prevents your beautiful chocolate dipped pretzel rods from sticking and makes cleanup a breeze.

Creating the White Base Layer

  1. Begin by melting the bright white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup according to package directions. Usually, this means 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring between each interval until smooth.
  2. Once melted, pour the melted candy melts into a tall and slender cup or glass jar. Working one pretzel rod at a time, take a pretzel rod and dip ¾ of the rod into the melted white candy.
  3. Allow the excess to drip off (give it a gentle tap or twist) and place the pretzel rod on the parchment-line baking sheet. This is where patience pays off - let that excess drip or you'll end up with puddles!
  4. Repeat the white color with the remaining pretzel rods. Let the rods dry at room temperature until the white melted candy is set, about 15 minutes.

I sometimes place mine in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to speed things up if I'm in a hurry (which, let's be honest, is most of the time with a busy household!).

Adding the Blue Layer With Sprinkles

  1. Melt the blue candy melts according to package directions. Pour the melted blue candy into a tall and slender cup or glass jar.
  2. Dip the top ⅓ of the white candy-coated pretzel rod into the melted blue candy. Allow the excess to drip off.
  3. Place the rod onto the parchment paper and immediately press a few star shaped sprinkles (or patriotic sprinkles) into the blue candy before it sets. Work quickly here - the candy melts set fast!
  4. Repeat with the remaining rods and allow them to dry completely, about 15 minutes.

Finishing With Red Stripes

  1. Melt the red candy melts according to the package directions. Pour the melted red candy into a Ziploc sandwich size bag, or a piping bag with a small tip.
  2. Snip a tiny corner off the Ziploc bag if using, and drizzle red lines over the white area (not covered in blue) of the pretzel rod.

I like to hold the bag about 4 inches above the pretzels and move quickly for thin, even lines.

  1. Allow the pretzel rods to finish drying completely, at room temperature, before serving.

The first time I made these, I tried to rush the process and ended up with a bit of a melty mess. Trust me, giving them proper time to set between layers makes all the difference in the final presentation!

Storing Your Chocolate Dipped Treats

These chocolate dipped pretzel rods store beautifully in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Just be sure to place them in a single layer or separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

I don't recommend refrigerating these treats as the condensation when you bring them back to room temperature can make the candy coating a bit spotty.

And unlike some desserts, these don't freeze well - the pretzels can get soggy when thawed.

There's no reheating needed - these treats are ready to enjoy straight from the container!

Expert Tips For Pretzel Rod Success

  • Use a tall and slender cup for dipping the pretzel rods. You want it narrow enough so that the melted candy is deep enough to properly coat the pretzel without needing a ton of candy melts.
  • Measure a pretzel rod up against your dipping container before melting the candy to ensure it's tall enough to dip ¾ of the rod.
  • If your candy melts seem too thick for smooth dipping, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening to thin it out.
  • Work with one color at a time, allowing each layer to set completely before moving on to the next color.
  • For the red drizzle, less is more! You want thin lines for the most professional-looking finish.
  • Keep your working area cool - candy melts and summer heat don't mix well! I once tried making these during a heatwave without air conditioning and let's just say it wasn't my finest moment.
  • If you're making these with kids, the sprinkle step is perfect for little helpers, but you might want to handle the hot melted candy yourself.

Creative Variations For Chocolate Pretzel Rods

  • Change up the colors for different holidays: orange and black for Halloween, green and red for Christmas, or your favorite team colors for game day.
  • Try different toppings like crushed nuts, mini chocolate chips, or crushed candy canes instead of sprinkles.
  • For a more sophisticated version, use dark chocolate instead of candy melts and drizzle with white chocolate.
  • Add a few drops of peppermint extract to the white chocolate for a cool, refreshing twist.
  • Create a dessert board by serving these alongside fruit, cookies, and other dippable treats.

Have you ever tried mixing different flavors of candy melts? I experimented with adding a tiny bit of strawberry flavoring to the red candy melts once, and it was amazing!

Ingredients

  • 12 pretzel rods
  • 1 bag bright white candy melts 12 oz
  • 1 cup royal blue candy melts
  • 1 cup red candy melts
  • star shaped sprinkles or patriotic mix sprinkles

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet (cookie sheet) with parchment paper, wax paper, or foil.
  • Begin by melting the bright white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup according to package directions.
  • Once melted, pour the melted candy melts into a tall and slender cup or glass jar. Working one pretzel rod at a time, take a pretzel rod and dip ¾ of the pretzel rod into the melted white candy. Allow the excess to drip off and place the pretzel rod on the parchment-line baking sheet.

  • Allow the pretzel rods to finish drying completely, at room temperature, before serving.

Notes

Tall Slender Cup: Use a tall and slender cup for dipping the pretzel rods into. You want it slender so that the melted candy melts can fill it enough in order for the pretzel rod to be dipped into it. Measure a pretzel rod up against the jar or cup to make sure it will be tall enough in order to dip ¾ of the pretzel rod into.
Candy Melts: These are labeled as 'candy melts' and I buy the Wilton brand. You will find them in the cake decorating aisle at Walmart or at any craft store in the cake decorating aisle.
Sprinkles: If you can't find the star shaped sprinkles then use any patriotic themed sprinkles you can find. There are always red, white, and blue sprinkle varieties at the store. Or omit the sprinkles and/or star shaped sprinkles entirely and just go with the red, white, and blue.
