Christmas Snack Mix

Listen, I'm just going to be real with you right now. Every year around the holidays, I make this holiday snack mix and it disappears faster than Emily can say "Mom, can I have more?" It's become one of those things that everyone expects me to bring to parties, and I'm not mad about it because it takes maybe 10 minutes to throw together!

Holiday snack mix

Last December, I was scrambling to bring something to our neighborhood holiday party (I'd completely forgotten until the day of, because of course I did), and I threw this together with stuff I had in my pantry. Three neighbors asked for the recipe before the night was over. That's when I knew this Christmas snack mix was going to be a keeper on the blog.

This sweet and salty combo hits different during the holidays. You've got crunchy rice cereal, those cone-shaped Bugles we all secretly love, twisty pretzels, and festive M&Ms all coated in smooth white chocolate. It's ridiculously easy, doesn't require turning on your oven (thank goodness), and makes a ton so you can gift it, serve it at parties, or just keep it all to yourself. No judgment here!

If you're looking for more no-bake Christmas treats, you should really try my 4th of July Oreo Balls (just swap out the colors for Christmas!).

Why You'll Love This Christmas Party Mix

I'm telling you, this festive snack mix checks all the boxes for busy holiday cooking:

  • No oven required - Seriously, just a microwave and a bowl. That's it. Your oven is probably busy with a million other things anyway.
  • Ready in under 40 minutes - Most of that time is just waiting for it to set up. You can literally make this during a commercial break (okay, maybe two commercial breaks).
  • Perfect for gifting - I pack this in mason jars with a ribbon and boom, instant gift that people actually want. Way better than another candle.
  • Sweet and salty combo - The white chocolate adds sweetness while the pretzels and Bugles bring that salty crunch we all need.
  • Kid-friendly and customizable - Emily loves helping me make this, and you can swap the M&Ms for any candy you want. I've done it with crushed candy canes before and it was SO good.
  • Makes a big batch - One recipe feeds a crowd or lasts our family about a week (if we're really restraining ourselves).

Ingredients For Holiday Snack Mix

Holiday Chex bowl

Here's what you'll need to make this white chocolate snack mix. Nothing fancy, just good stuff you probably have on hand:

  • 4 cups rice cereal - I use Rice Chex most of the time, but any rice cereal works great.
  • 4 cups Bugles snacks - These little cone guys add the best crunch. Trust me on this one.
  • 3 cups pretzels - I use the mini twists, but small squares or sticks work too.
  • 1 package (11 ounces) M&M candy pieces - Get the red and green ones for Christmas, or just use regular. They all taste the same anyway!
  • 1 package (16 ounces) vanilla almond bark - This is what makes the magic happen. You can also call it white candy coating.

How To Make Christmas Snack Mix

Okay, this is where it gets super easy. I wasn't kidding about the 10-minute prep time!

Getting Set Up

  1. Line your work surface - Grab some wax paper or parchment paper and spread it out on your counter or a large baking sheet. This is where your finished mix will cool, and trust me, you don't want to skip this step unless you enjoy scraping dried white chocolate off your counter (been there, done that).

Mixing The Base

  1. Combine the dry ingredients - Dump your rice cereal, Bugles, and pretzels into the biggest mixing bowl you've got. Give it a gentle stir to mix everything together. I learned the hard way that if you're too rough here, you'll end up with broken Bugles and nobody wants that.
  2. Set aside the M&Ms - Measure out your M&M candies but keep them separate for now. We'll add these at the end so they don't melt completely into the mix.

The White Chocolate Magic

  1. Melt the almond bark - Break up your vanilla almond bark into chunks and put it in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it in 30-second bursts, stirring between each one. This usually takes me about 2 minutes total, but your microwave might be different. The key is to not rush it or you'll end up with scorched chocolate (which smells terrible, by the way).

Bringing It All Together

  1. Coat everything - Pour that melted white chocolate right over your cereal mixture. Now here's the thing - you gotta work kind of fast because the chocolate starts to set pretty quickly. Use a big spoon or spatula and gently fold everything together until all the pieces are coated. It doesn't have to be perfect, just make sure everything gets some chocolate love.
  2. Add the candy - Toss in those M&Ms and give everything another quick stir. They'll get a light coating but won't completely melt, which is exactly what we want.
  3. Spread and cool - Pour the whole mixture onto your prepared wax paper and spread it out in an even layer. Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes until the chocolate hardens up.

Finishing Touches

  1. Break it apart - Once everything's set, break the mix into bite-sized pieces. I just use my hands for this part. Store it in an airtight container and try not to eat it all in one sitting (I believe in you, even if I can't do it myself).

Storage And How Long It Lasts

This Christmas party mix stays fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. I usually use a big Tupperware container or one of those giant ziplock bags.

Want to make it ahead for holiday gifts? This freezes beautifully! Just pack it in freezer-safe containers or bags, label it with the date, and stick it in the freezer for up to 2 months. When you're ready to eat it or gift it, let it sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes and it's good to go.

Honestly though, in my house, this stuff doesn't last more than a few days. Emily and her friends go through it like it's going out of style.

Creative Ways To Make This Snack Mix Your Own

The great thing about this recipe is that it's super flexible. Here are some variations I've tried that worked really well:

Different Candy Options

Swap those M&Ms for whatever you're feeling! I've made this with:

  • Reese's Pieces - The peanut butter and white chocolate combo is chef's kiss
  • Mini chocolate chips - Because sometimes you just need more chocolate
  • Crushed candy canes - This makes it taste SO festive
  • Red and white peppermint candies - Another winter twist that people love

Making It Gluten-Free

Need a gluten-free version? Skip the Bugles and use more rice cereal instead (just check that your brand is certified gluten-free). You could also add some gluten-free pretzels if you can find them.

Going Nuts

Want to add some protein? Toss in a cup of your favorite nuts - peanuts, cashews, almonds, or pecans all work great. I sometimes throw in some roasted peanuts because they add a nice salty crunch.

Seasonal Switches

You can make this for literally any holiday by changing the M&M colors:

  • Valentine's Day - Pink and red M&Ms
  • Easter - Pastel M&Ms
  • 4th of July - Red, white, and blue
  • Halloween - Orange and black

Pro Tips For The Best Results

After making this probably 50 times (not exaggerating), here's what I've learned:

Watch that chocolate - When you're melting the almond bark, don't walk away from the microwave. It can go from perfect to burnt in like 10 seconds. Ask me how I know!

Work quickly - Once that white chocolate hits the cereal mix, you've got maybe 2-3 minutes before it starts to set up. This isn't the time to be scrolling through Instagram.

Don't overmix - Be gentle when you're stirring everything together. You want to coat things, not smash them into powder.

Let it fully set - I know it's tempting to dig in right away, but give it the full 30 minutes. If you break it up too soon, you'll just have a sticky mess on your hands.

Make it festive - Want to make this look extra special? Add some holiday sprinkles right after you spread it out on the wax paper, before it sets.

Notes

Tips For The Best Christmas Snack Mix:
  • Set Up For Success: Before you start, line your counter or baking sheet with wax paper or parchment. This will save time and make clean-up easy.
  • Melt Like A Pro: When melting the almond bark, go slow and steady. Pop it in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring in between, so it's silky smooth without scorching.
  • Keep It Moving: Once you pour the melted almond bark over the mix, stir it quickly and gently to coat everything evenly. Add the M&Ms last so they don't get melty.
  • Make It Yours: Have fun adding your favorite goodies! Toss in some nuts, dried cranberries, or holiday-themed sprinkles to give it a personal twist and make it extra festive.
Recipe Variations:
  • Gluten-Free: Use additional Chex cereal instead of Bugel's corn chips, and make sure the other ingredients are gluten-free (they should be naturally, but it's always good to check).
  • Go Nuts: Toss in peanuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, or walnuts.
  • Make it Festive: Use seasonal M&Ms, such as pink and red or black and orange, for Halloween snack mix or Valentine's snack mix.
  • Autumn Snack Mix: Swap out the M&Ms for caramel chips and mix two teaspoons of cinnamon into the melted vanilla bark for amazing fall flavors.
How To Freeze: Stock your freezer for gift-giving, unexpected entertaining or when a snack attack hits. All you do is write the name and freezing date on the container or bag, and place the mix in the freezer. It will stay fresh for up to 2 months. When you're ready to enjoy it, remove the mix from the freezer and let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes.
