Can we talk about how much I love dinners that come together on one pan? Because this Sheet Pan Lemon Herb Salmon & Asparagus has become my go-to when I need something that looks fancy but doesn't leave me with a sink full of dishes.

Sheet pan salmon asparagus

Last Tuesday, Emily had two friends over after soccer practice, and I had about 20 minutes to pull together something that didn't scream "emergency dinner." I grabbed salmon from the freezer (yes, frozen works!), threw this together, and honestly? The girls thought I'd been cooking for hours. The lemon-garlic butter melts right into everything as it bakes, and the whole kitchen smells amazing.

The best part? While this is baking, you can actually sit down for five minutes. Or unload the dishwasher. Or just stand there and smell how good your dinner is going to be. If you're looking for another quick seafood dinner, you might want to check out my honey garlic glazed salmon too – it's just as easy and uses similar ingredients.

Why You'll Love This Salmon And Asparagus Sheet Pan Dinner

  • Ready in 20 minutes – Seriously, from oven to table faster than takeout delivery
  • One pan cleanup – My favorite kind of cooking (who has time for multiple pans?)
  • That lemon-garlic butter – It's ridiculously good and makes everything taste restaurant-quality
  • Perfect for busy weeknights – Emily and I make this at least twice a month
  • Looks impressive – Great for when you want to look like you tried really hard (but didn't)
  • Healthy without being boring – High protein, lots of veggies, and actually tastes good

Ingredients For Sheet Pan Lemon Herb Salmon

For The Salmon And Asparagus:

  • 2 lbs salmon filet, cut into six 6 oz portions
  • 2 lbs asparagus, fibrous ends removed (use medium to thick stalks)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small lemon, sliced into rings for garnish

For The Lemon-Garlic-Herb Butter:

  • 6 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, from 1 small lemon
  • 2 garlic cloves, pressed or minced
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt (I use sea salt)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Quick note about the butter – you need it soft enough to mash everything together. I usually just leave it on the counter for 30 minutes while I'm doing other stuff. But if you forgot (like I do half the time), just put the wrapped stick in a ziplock bag and submerge it in warm water for 10-15 minutes. Works like a charm!

How To Make Sheet Pan Salmon With Asparagus

Prep Everything:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F with the rack in the top third position.
  2. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Trim the paper so it doesn't hang over the edges – trust me on this one, I learned the hard way when smoke filled my kitchen because the paper got too close to the broiler.
  3. Arrange the salmon filets in a row down the center of your pan.
  4. Place the trimmed asparagus on both sides of the salmon.
  5. Drizzle the asparagus lightly with olive oil and roll them around to coat. Sprinkle both the salmon and asparagus with salt and pepper.

Make The Magic Butter:

  1. Grab a medium bowl and use a fork to mash together all the butter ingredients. This takes a couple minutes of serious mashing – don't give up! It'll eventually come together into this gorgeous flavored butter. You can also throw everything in a food processor if you're feeling lazy (no judgment here).
  2. Spoon about ¾ of the butter over the salmon filets and spread it around. It doesn't need to be perfect – just get it mostly covered.
  3. Dab the remaining butter over the asparagus spears.

Bake It:

  1. Top each salmon filet with a lemon slice. This is totally optional but makes it look so pretty!
  2. Bake uncovered at 450°F for 10-12 minutes. Thinner filets take about 10 minutes, thicker ones need 12 minutes. The salmon should reach 145°F on an instant-read thermometer.
  3. Switch your oven to BROIL and cook for another 2-3 minutes to give everything a beautiful golden color. Watch it closely during this part – broilers work fast and you don't want to burn dinner after coming this far!

The salmon is done when it flakes easily with a fork and has that gorgeous opaque pink color in the center. Don't overcook it or it'll get dry and nobody wants that.

Storage And Reheating Tips

I'll be honest – this tastes best right out of the oven. But leftovers happen (especially when Emily decides she's "not that hungry" after I've already cooked for six people).

Storing: Put cooled leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. The salmon and asparagus can go in the same container.

Reheating: This is where it gets tricky. Microwaving salmon never works out great, so here's what I do instead. Reheat in a 275°F oven for about 10 minutes, just until warmed through. Or eat it cold on top of a salad – surprisingly good!

The lemon-garlic butter can be made up to 3 days ahead. Just keep it in the fridge and let it soften at room temperature before using. Sometimes I make extra and use it on chicken or pasta later in the week.

Tips For The Best Baked Salmon And Asparagus

Lemon herb salmon asparagus

Watch your asparagus thickness. I made this once with really thin asparagus and it turned into mush. If your asparagus is on the skinny side, either add it halfway through baking or put it on a separate pan so you can pull it out when it's tender.

Don't skip the broiler step. Those last 2-3 minutes under the broiler are what give the salmon that restaurant-quality golden top. Just don't walk away – broilers are fast and unforgiving!

Room temperature salmon cooks more evenly. I take mine out of the fridge about 15 minutes before cooking. Makes a difference!

Want to mix things up? Try these variations:

  • Swap the parsley for fresh dill (amazing with salmon)
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the butter for some heat
  • Use green beans or broccoli instead of asparagus
  • Throw some cherry tomatoes on the pan for the last 5 minutes
  • Try lime instead of lemon for a different citrus vibe

Pro tip: If you're making this for guests, you can prep the flavored butter earlier in the day and have everything trimmed and ready to go. Then it's literally just assembly and baking when everyone arrives. Looks way more impressive than the effort required!

Salmon And Asparagus Sheet Pan Dinner FAQs

Can I use frozen salmon for this sheet pan recipe?

Yes! Just thaw it completely in the refrigerator overnight and pat dry before seasoning. Cooking time remains the same.

What can I substitute for asparagus in this salmon recipe?

Green beans, broccoli florets, Brussels sprouts, or zucchini work great. Adjust cooking time based on vegetable thickness.

How do I know when the salmon is done?

Salmon is done when it reaches 145°F internal temperature and flakes easily with a fork. It should be opaque and slightly pink in the center.

Can I make the lemon-garlic butter ahead of time?

Absolutely! Prepare the flavored butter up to 3 days ahead and refrigerate. Let it soften at room temperature before using.

This Easy Sheet Pan Dinner Is A Winner

This sheet pan salmon and asparagus recipe has saved my weeknight dinners more times than I can count. The lemon-herb butter makes everything taste special, but it's still simple enough to throw together on a Tuesday night when everyone's tired and hungry.

Emily actually asks for this one by name now, which is saying something since she went through a phase where she claimed to hate all fish (we don't talk about those dark months). The salmon comes out tender and flaky, the asparagus gets just the right amount of char, and that butter? It's basically liquid gold.

Give this one a try! And don't forget to pin it to your dinner ideas board so you can find it next time you're staring into your fridge wondering what to make.

Ingredients

For the Salmon and Asparagus
  • 2 lbs salmon filet cut into six 6 oz portions
  • 2 lbs asparagus fibrous ends removed
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small lemon sliced into rings for garnish
For the Lemon-Garlic-Herb Butter
  • 6 tablespoon unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice from 1 small lemon
  • 2 garlic cloves pressed or minced
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Equipment

  • Large rimmed baking sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Medium Bowl
  • Instant-read thermometer

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F with oven rack in top third. Line large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper, trimming the paper to just fit so it doesn't go over edges of pan (this prevents the paper from charring under broiler).
  2. Place salmon filets in a row down the center of your lined baking pan. Arrange trimmed asparagus on the sides of the salmon. Drizzle asparagus lightly with olive oil and roll to coat. Sprinkle both asparagus and salmon with salt and pepper.
  3. In a medium bowl, use a fork to mash together all ingredients for flavored butter. It takes a couple of minutes to come together but keep mashing and it will happen. You can also use a food processor for the job if you prefer.
  4. Spoon ¾ of your flavored butter over the salmon and spread evenly (no need for perfection). Dab remaining butter mix over the asparagus.
  5. Top each salmon filet with a slice of lemon and bake uncovered at 450°F for 10-12 minutes (a thinner fillet will take 10 minutes and a larger fillet takes 12 minutes).
  6. Set the oven to BROIL and bake another 2-3 minutes to give the salmon a golden glow. Bake until salmon is flaky and cooked through with an internal temperature of 145°F on an instant-read thermometer.

Notes

Asparagus Note: This recipe is written for medium to thick asparagus. If your asparagus is thin, add it to the sheet pan halfway through baking or put it on a separate sheet pan so you can pull it out when it has reached your desired tenderness.
How to Speed-Soften Butter: Place wrapped stick of butter in airtight ziploc bag and submerge bag in warm (100°F) water, placing a weight over the top so it doesn't float. Let sit 10-15 mins until softened.
