Have you ever had Southern fried apples with vanilla ice cream that were so good you couldn't stop eating them straight from the skillet?
I remember the first time I made these apples for Emily's school bake sale last fall. She came home raving about how everyone kept asking for the recipe, and honestly, I felt pretty proud! There's something magical about warm, cinnamon-sugar apples swimming in brown butter that just makes everything better. They're soft, sweet, and have this amazing caramelized edge that tastes like fall in a bowl.

What I love most about this recipe is how simple it is. You don't need fancy equipment or hard-to-find ingredients – just good apples, butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Twenty minutes from start to finish, and you've got yourself a side dish that works for Thanksgiving dinner or a dessert that'll have everyone asking for seconds.

Ingredients For Southern Fried Apples
For The Apples:
- 4 cups chopped apples (sliced into half-moons) – I prefer Granny Smith, Fuji, or Pink Lady
- 1 medium lemon (juiced)
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Optional Toppings:
- 1 scoop vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip
- ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (lightly toasted)
- 2 tablespoons caramel sauce
- 1 pinch sea salt
- Fresh mint leaves
How To Make Southern Fried Apples Step By Step
Prep Your Apples
- Cut each apple in half and remove the seeds and core.
- Slice the apples into ½-inch thick half-moon shapes. Don't make them too thin or they'll turn to mush too quickly!
- Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the apple slices immediately. This keeps them from turning brown while you work on the rest. I learned this trick from my cooking classes in college, and it's been a lifesaver.
Brown The Butter
- Place your butter in a light-colored skillet over medium-low heat. This is important – you need to see the butter changing color, which is tough in a dark pan.
- Stir the butter constantly with a wire whisk or spatula as it melts.
- Watch for bubbles and foam – after about 3 minutes, the bubbling will stop. That's your cue!
- Keep stirring and look for brown specks at the bottom of the pan. When you see them and smell that nutty aroma, your brown butter is ready. Don't walk away during this step! I once got distracted by a phone call and ended up with burnt butter (not fun).
Make The Cinnamon Sugar Mixture
- Add both sugars and cinnamon directly to the brown butter.
- Whisk everything together until well combined.
- Cover and cook for 2 minutes over low heat. This helps the sugars melt and creates that gorgeous syrupy base.
Cook The Apples
- Add your apple slices to the skillet and toss them around to coat with the butter-sugar mixture.
- Cook for 12-15 minutes over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Watch for the apples to soften – they should be tender but not falling apart. The exact time depends on your apple variety and how thick you sliced them.
Toast The Nuts And Serve
- Toast your walnuts or pecans in a dry pan until fragrant. This takes about 2-3 minutes and really brings out their flavor.
- Plate your apples while they're still warm.
- Top with vanilla ice cream (the contrast between hot apples and cold ice cream is amazing!), toasted nuts, a drizzle of caramel sauce, a tiny pinch of sea salt, and fresh mint leaves if you're feeling fancy.
Storage And Reheating Tips

I always make extra because these fried apples keep beautifully! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. They actually taste even better the next day once all those flavors have had time to hang out together.
For longer storage, pop them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. I like to freeze them in portion-sized containers so I can thaw just what I need.
When you're ready to eat them again, reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally. You can also microwave them, but do it in 30-second bursts so they heat evenly. If they seem a bit dry after reheating, add a tiny splash of water or apple juice.
Tips For The Best Cinnamon Fried Apples
Choose the right apples. Granny Smith gives you that perfect tart-sweet balance, while Fuji and Pink Lady are naturally sweeter. I've tried this with Red Delicious once and wasn't impressed – they got too mushy too fast.
Don't skip the lemon juice. I know it seems like an extra step, but it really does prevent browning and adds a subtle brightness that balances all that sugar.
Master the brown butter. This is what separates good fried apples from GREAT ones. That nutty, caramelized flavor from brown butter is magic. Just watch it carefully – there's a fine line between brown and burnt!
Adjust the sugar to your taste. If you're using super sweet apples like Fuji, you can cut the sugar by up to half. I usually taste the apples first and adjust accordingly.
Try different spice combinations. Sometimes I add ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg or ½ teaspoon ground ginger along with the cinnamon. All-spice is great too! Makes the whole house smell like a bakery.
Serve them warm. These are best enjoyed fresh from the skillet. The temperature contrast with cold ice cream creates this amazing texture experience that my daughter absolutely loves.
Want to get creative? Try serving these skillet fried apples over pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal for breakfast. They're also incredible on top of vanilla pound cake or even stirred into plain yogurt!
Frequently Asked Questions About Southern Fried Apples
Yes! Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave before serving.
Granny Smith, Fuji, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp apples work beautifully. Granny Smith offers tartness while Fuji and Pink Lady provide natural sweetness.
Yes, you can reduce the sugar by up to half, especially if using sweeter apple varieties like Fuji. The apples' natural sweetness will still shine through with the cinnamon and brown butter.
While you can use regular melted butter, browning it adds a rich, nutty depth that elevates the dish. It only takes 3-5 minutes and makes a noticeable difference in flavor.

Final Thoughts On This Brown Butter Apple Recipe

These Southern fried apples with vanilla ice cream have become one of my most-requested recipes, and for good reason. They're ridiculously easy to make, taste like you spent hours in the kitchen, and work for literally any occasion. I've served them at Thanksgiving dinner, made them for Tuesday night dessert, and even brought them to potlucks where they disappeared in minutes.
The combination of tender apples, warm cinnamon, and that incredible brown butter creates something truly special. When you add the cold vanilla ice cream, toasted nuts, and a drizzle of caramel? It's basically heaven in a bowl.
What I love most is how forgiving this recipe is. Use whatever apples you have on hand, adjust the sugar to your taste, add different spices if you want – it always turns out delicious. Even when I've messed up the timing and cooked them a bit too long, they still tasted amazing (just more like apple sauce!).
So grab some apples, fire up your skillet, and give these a try. Your kitchen will smell incredible, and I promise you'll be making them again and again. Don't forget to save this recipe to Pinterest so you can find it when fall rolls around!
